The Buddhist holiday, Bodhi Day, was observed on December 8th. The holiday commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Gautam, is believed to have experienced enlightenment, also known as Bodhi in Sanskrit or Pali.
Bodhi Day (成道会?, Jōdō-e) is traditionally the 8th day of the 12th lunar month and has been observed in Japan since the Meiji Restoration (1862–1869).
